ECNL vs. Girls Academy: What Parents Should Know

Marcos Salles By Marcos Salles Updated 11 min read

Quick answer

ECNL and Girls Academy (GA) are the two national elite leagues for girls' club soccer, and neither official site says one is better. ECNL has 129 top-level clubs in 10 conferences plus a large Regional League below it. GA has over 120 clubs in 11 conferences plus Aspire below it. Both run showcases that college coaches can attend. The right question for your daughter is which one her club plays in.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I heard parents at the field say "she plays ECNL" or "she's GA" the way people say the name of a school. I never knew what the difference was. I am not a coach or a former player, so this guide uses only what the two leagues publish themselves, read on October 26, 2026, and it says plainly when a number is missing.

This site is independent and not affiliated with U.S. Soccer, ECNL, Girls Academy or any club. I am not going to say which league is better, because neither official source does and your daughter's club matters more than the logo. If you are new to the levels, start with the parent's guide to girls' club soccer in the U.S. and come back.

What is the difference between ECNL and Girls Academy?

Both are leagues that clubs join. Your daughter plays for a club, and the club decides which league to enter. The table puts the published facts next to each other.

Two things from the table are worth keeping in mind. First, both leagues have a ladder: a club can start in the lower tier and move up, and ECNL says clubs earn promotion through their performances over multiple seasons and age groups. Second, the leagues describe themselves differently. ECNL stresses the role of clubs as the main drivers of player development, while Girls Academy calls itself "the leading youth development platform for the best female soccer players in the United States." Those are their own descriptions, not a ranking.

How does an ECNL season work?

ECNL teams play inside a regional conference. The league's own 2026-27 postseason document lists ten girls' conferences with between 9 and 17 teams each, and the regular season runs from 9 to 22 league games depending on the conference and the age group. A small conference where teams meet twice can mean more league games than a big one where they meet once, so ask how many games the team will actually play.

The league table decides who goes to the national playoffs. Teams are ranked by points per game in conference games only, and the document sets how many places each conference gets. At U13 to U17, 48 teams qualify automatically for the Champions League bracket. At U18/19, 16 teams qualify and each plays a one-game play-in to reach an eight-team national finals. U15 to U17 teams that finish just below the Champions League line go to the North American Cup, and U16 to U17 teams below that go to Showcase Cups A and B.

ECNL also announced a new inaugural Conference League Playoffs in October 2026, run with National 1 League. Below the top level, the Regional League has six regional playoffs in June 2027, and the 2026-27 events list names the Leaders Cup as a Regional League event.

How does a Girls Academy season work?

Girls Academy clubs are grouped into regional conferences too, with over 120 clubs in eleven conferences in 2025/26. League play starts in August and finishes with playoffs and national finals in June and July. The part that is different from ECNL is the Champions Cup, which the league describes as bringing together "the top-performing clubs and teams from across the Girls Academy."

  • Who plays: 24 teams per age group from U14 to U19, and 20 teams at U13. For 2026-27 the field is 19 club qualifiers per age group plus wildcard teams.
  • Stage one: group games in December during the GA Winter Showcase.
  • Stage two: the top 16 teams per age group play the Champions Cup finals in March (March 4 to 9, 2027, at IMG Academy in Florida).
  • The prize: teams earn points by finishing place (16 for first, 15 for second, and so on), and the club with the most points across its age groups is named the Girls Academy Overall Club Champion.

Below the top level, Aspire is described as a second tier with regional league play and regional and national showcases, where clubs must apply and meet criteria. GA says member clubs can use it for second teams, and that outside clubs can use it to show they can compete at the highest level.

Where do college coaches see the players?

Both leagues say college exposure is part of what they offer, and both run events built for it. What neither official page gives is the number of coaches who attend, so I will not give one. Here is what is published.

The league says registration for college coaches and scouts opens as each event approaches. Its College Impact page says 93% of Girls Academy players name playing in college as a goal, and that more than 1,200 players committed to college programs, at Division I, II, III and NAIA schools, over the league's first three years. The page does not date that figure, and a commitment count is not the same as a scholarship count.

ECNL's scouts page lists 14 girls' events for 2026-27, each with a scout registration link and a team list. Twelve of the 14 start at U15 or older.

The ECNL Playoffs in San Diego, June 25 to July 2, 2027, are listed separately on the league's calendar. In both leagues, the team's schedule decides which of these events your daughter's team actually attends, so ask the club for its calendar.

Can a girl play for her high school and in ECNL or GA?

I did not find a rule on this on the official pages of either league that I read. ECNL's parents page lists "School Travel Letters" among its documents, but their contents are not public on that page. Because school and state rules vary, the honest answer is the one from our parent's guide: ask the club in writing, and check your state high school association.

What does ECNL or Girls Academy cost?

Neither league publishes a fee, because each club sets its own. In the 2026-27 fee sheets we read for our parent budget guide, ECNL was $3,300 at one California club, Girls Academy level was $3,200 and $3,290 at two others, and ECNL Regional League was $1,550 at a fourth. Those are four clubs, not an average, and tournament entries, travel and kits were billed on top. The league name is a smaller part of the price than the club's own costs.

What about younger players?

Girls Academy says Inspire, for U11 and U12, is "where the Girls Academy pathway begins." ECNL's pathway starts with Pre-ECNL, and the league says it is launching 11 new Pre-ECNL leagues in 2026-27. The official pages I read do not state the Pre-ECNL age groups, so ask the club. Whatever the name, a younger girl in a league with a national label is on the same sheet of paper as any other club team: check the fees, the travel and the coach before the logo.

What should you ask your club?

Ask every club the same questions and compare the answers in writing:

  • Which league and which level is the team in? ECNL, ECNL Regional League or Pre-ECNL. Girls Academy, Aspire or Inspire. The names sound alike and the levels are not the same.
  • Which conference, and how far is the farthest game? Conferences are regional, so this sets your driving.
  • How many league games and which showcases does the team play? Use the two tables above and ask which events are on the team's calendar.
  • What does the fee include, and what is billed separately? Our budget guide has a worksheet.
  • What is the policy on school soccer and on switching clubs? ECNL lists "Transfer Request Guidance" among its parent documents.
  • How are players placed on teams? Ask who decides, and when.

If the 2027 Women's World Cup is what started your daughter's interest, the tournament schedule is a good place to begin. Starting a daughter at a lower level is not a wrong turn, and a girl who is having fun is the best sign you can have.

Where does this guide fit in the series?

This is the league comparison in our Girls' Youth Soccer section. It builds on the pillar guide and the cost guide. Dates and fields change each season, so this page will be updated when the leagues publish new schedules. You can read about the person writing it on the About page, and how we check sources on How we write.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ECNL and Girls Academy?

Both are national elite leagues for girls' club teams that clubs join. ECNL has 129 top-level clubs in 10 conferences, with a Regional League and Pre-ECNL below it. Girls Academy has over 120 clubs in eleven conferences (2025/26), with Aspire below it and Inspire for U11 and U12. Neither league publishes fees.

Is ECNL or Girls Academy better?

Neither league's official site ranks itself against the other, and I will not either. ECNL describes clubs as the main drivers of development; Girls Academy calls itself "the leading youth development platform for the best female soccer players in the United States." The club, coach and travel load matter more for most families than the league name.

What ages does each league cover?

ECNL's 2026-27 national playoffs cover U13 to U18/19, and its calendar lists some U12 events. Girls Academy lists teams in U13 to U17 and U19 for 2025/26, plus Inspire for U11 and U12. Check your league's birth-year matrix, because age groups now follow an August 1 to July 31 cycle.

Do college coaches go to ECNL and Girls Academy events?

Both leagues run events with college coach and scout registration. ECNL lists 14 girls' events for 2026-27 with scout registration links, and Girls Academy lists regional events, showcases and finals, with coach registration opening as each approaches. Neither page says how many coaches attend.

Can a girl play high school soccer and ECNL or GA?

I did not find a rule on the official pages of either league. School and state rules differ, so ask the club in writing and check your state high school association.

How much does ECNL or Girls Academy cost?

Each club sets its fees. In the 2026-27 fee sheets we read, ECNL was $3,300 at one club, Girls Academy level was $3,200 and $3,290 at two others, and ECNL Regional League was $1,550 at another, before travel, tournaments and kits.

What is the Girls Academy Champions Cup?

It is a Girls Academy competition for the top-performing clubs and teams: 24 teams per age group from U14 to U19 and 20 at U13. Group games are in December during the Winter Showcase, and the top 16 teams per age group play the finals in March at IMG Academy. The club with the most points wins the Overall Club Champion title.
